Road to Kingdom: Episode 5-6: Elimination & Round 3 Pt. 1 (Spoilers!)

To be honest, I was bracing myself for the elimination in Episode 4. But instead of doing it there, they moved it to Episode 5. I’m pretty sure it was more for dramatic effect, but I would have preferred to see the elimination happen in Episode 4, if time permitted.

In any case, most of Episode 5 dealt with the elimination, showing the new rankings, and how the rest of the groups prepared for Round 3. Just like in Queendom, Round 3 consisted of two parts- a collaboration performance and an individual group performance. The groups were paired up by drawing lots, and each collaboration team were given the freedom to choose the song that they wanted perform.

Winning the collaboration round was also pretty important as the first place winner would gain 5,000 points each for their respective teams, while the team in second place would get 3,000, and the one in third place would only get 1,000 points.

They also changed up the rules for voting. So now, 120 audience members would be selected to vote for their top 3 groups; and while only six members from each team could vote, they can now also vote for themselves.

For the individual performance, Mnet decided to give them a twist they didn’t expect, but at the same time, I’m still pretty confused about it. But basically, they had to pick a song they wanted another team to cover but wouldn’t know who would perform it. And then they were told that they would switch songs with their collaborators. So if Pentagon’s song pick would go to their partner team’s pick, and so on. But I’ll talk more about that plus this round’s elimination in my next Road to Kingdom post.

The bulk of the episode also showed us how the groups met each other to prepare for the round, and the process behind that; which I think is an improvement from Queendom’s version of this as it took an entire episode just for the vocalists to choose their partners.

As this post contains spoilers about the elimination in Episode 4, please be warned that there will be spoilers from here on out!

Episode 4- Elimination

I have been bracing myself for this moment for quite some time now, ever since I first heard the rumors of who got eliminated. So, yes, Golden Child was unfortunately eliminated from the show. I thought that they had a lot of potential to show, and I would have loved to have seen them collaborate with other groups as well. I think that what really made them get eliminated was the fact that they kept on ranking 5th, even though I truly believe that they should have ranked first for Round 2; and then they placed last for the second round.

I cried a lot, even though I was prepared for this, mostly because Joochan blamed himself; Bomin cried because he was expecting more; Daeyeol cried after telling the members how great they were; and then Y cried after saying that Daeyeol is a good leader who encourages them but no one does the same for him. Funny thing though, it seems like Jibeom knew it and was expecting it already.

But, as this was filmed in April (my marker is that when the rankings were announced, it was Hyojin’s birthday), and with the news of Golden Child’s comeback, I’m glad that they had time to prepare for the upcoming comeback.

Also, another big win for Golden Child is that I do believe that they got plenty of new fans because of this show, and because of Jang Jun. (There’s a reason why that boy is my bias in that group!)

My Ranking (Round 2):

1.The Boyz

2.Verivery

3.ONF

4.Oneus

Show Ranking (Round 2):

1.The Boyz

2.Oneus

3.ONF

Oneus really turned the tables here by ranking second, which was definitely in their favor.

My Overall Ranking:

I think that unless something big happens, I do believe that either The Boyz or ONF will move on to Kingdom, and I’d be happy to see that happen.

Episode 4-5- Round 3 Part 1: The Collaboration Round

After the elimination, the groups were paired with each other by drawing lots, and the order that they were picked also determined the order of performance. Verivery and TOO, the youngest teams, were paired together; the two oldest groups Pentagon and ONF were paired together; and finally Oneus was paired with The Boyz. To be honest though, after watching the performances, I think that each of the groups really complemented each other well.

1.Verivery + TOO “막내 on Top”- ON by BTS

Unfortunately, the two youngest teams were also the two groups that were most in danger of being eliminated as they ranked 5th and 6th overall. That being said, I liked their fighting spirit; and I really have to praise Dongheon for being a good leader as he not only took care of all the kids, drilled them well, but he also took TOO’s suggestions in stride and considered things before actually saying yes to having all the TOO members perform. Verivery is known for being synchronized when it comes to dancing, and the practice portions really showed us HOW and WHY they can do that. Yeonho and Gyehyeon aren’t the best dancers in the group, but they have improved so much because Dongheon really DRILLS them to the last micro detail. Outside the practice room, he’s an awkward and kind dad; but in the practice room, he’s a firm drill sergeant. They definitely took a risk with not only having all the TOO members perform, but there were also extra back up dancers as well.

I think that they were able to achieve what they wanted from this performance, as the entire group looked like a cohesive unit, and I loved the military part where the boys were in lines and then they suddenly faced the camera. That was on point. The vocals were on point as well, especially Gyehyeon’s vocals combined with Jaeyun’s vocals were a match made in heaven. I was also VERY not prepared for blonde Yongseung, who also got center parts. It was a fun performance full of energy and fighting spirit.

These two groups complemented each other well as they both had that rookie spirit and energy.

2.ONF+Pentagon “Just On”-Kill This Love by Blackpink

I just love how ONF is full of ideas and that Pentagon has the technical expertise to help them all pull it off together. I think that using “Kill This Love” is risky because it’s a song that’s been covered over and over again, but this arrangement and performance was refreshing as it wasn’t the typical fierce kind of cover.

I love how ONF really zoned in on the emotions that they wanted to get out from the song and performance-gut wrenching pain as they are tormented by love, and it definitely translated well in the performance, with the female back up dancers being in control of the battered boys. It was definitely very haunting. I also liked that when I thought the performance was over, they decided to hit us in the gut one more time with Hyojin going up a platform, hugging one of the back up dancers, which fades to black; and then when the lights go on again, she’s gone, so Hyojin is just hugging air.

Also, can I just talk about how amazingly creepy J-US looked when he said “We must kill this love”?

After the first watch, I was speechless for a few seconds, just like how I was speechless after watching The Boyz’s “Reveal” performance last week.

Again, these two groups had great synergy, and I loved how they became close friends in the process.

3.The Boyz+Onues-Heroine by Sunmi

If Verivery and TOO’s chemistry was fun in a junior-senior kind of way right from the get go, and Pentagon’s and ONF’s chemistry was defined by great synergy and friendship from the beginning; I loved how Oneus’ and The Boyz’s first meeting felt like a date that begins awkwardly and develops after getting to know each other. The Boyz is pretty shy but warm, and Oneus is also pretty shy, but I’m glad that they were really able to complement each other as a group. The Boyz has showmanship and knows how to stage a story well in a creative and innovative manner, while Oneus has great ideas that are full of meaning, and it can be seen in this performance. It was also very interesting that they decided to go for a less fierce song this time around, and they were right, it definitely was a breath of fresh air.

I love how they took Sunmi’s “Heroine”, and really told a story in a very musical fashion, that is not only true for them but for all the groups as well. They basically told the story of everyone in the industry and all the steps they took to reach where they are right now. They showed the audition stage, the trainee phase, preparation for debut and finally debuting, having small successes by having a small fanbase to the point that they are more popular, the difficult times they experience, and finally the magic that happens when not only everyone in the group is together, but how each group also supports the others. I actually cried during this performance.

I loved every moment.  The careful attention to detail; adding in fans chanting all the groups’ names and then putting all of their names up on the LED screen, including  Golden Child’s; and finally, Hwanwoong saying “You must go on”.

Also, Hwanwoong and Q dancing in the spotlight was just magical and amazing!

My Ranking (Round 2):

1.The Boyz

2.Verivery

3.ONF

4.Oneus

5.Golden Child

6.TOO

7.Pentagon

Show Ranking (Round 2):

1.The Boyz

2.Oneus

3.ONF

4.Verivery

5.Pentagon

6.TOO

7.Golden Child

Oneus really turned the tables here by ranking second, which was definitely in their favor.

My Ranking:

1.The Boyz+Oneus

2.ONF+Pentagon

3.Verivery+TOO

Show Ranking:

1.ONF+Pentagon

2.Verivery+TOO

3.The Boyz+Oneus

Despite my ranking, I was really happy for both ONF and Pentagon as these two groups have NEVER gotten a first win during their entire existence, and them finally getting a win was just surreal for them.

The next round, the individual group round had them performing a song that was picked by their team partners. The order was also chosen at random by The Boyz.

Oneus got Infinite’s Be Mine, TOO got GOT7’s Hard Carry, ONF got Rain’s It’s Raining, Pentagon got Monsta X’s Follow, Verivery got Mamamoo’s Gogobebe, and The Boyz got VIXX’s Shangri-La.

Onues, GOT7 and ONF performed this week, but more on that from me in my post next Monday.

What did you think of the ranking and elimination in Episode 4? What did you think of the collaboration stages? Which songs and which groups would you have liked to have seen perform the songs chosen for the second half of the third round? Let me know in the comments below!
